TRIP NOTES
The LUTHERAN CHURCH of the PHILIPPINES
28 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH, 2013

And so here we are again, this time on route to the Philippines. I had to cancel my last scheduled trip there (November 2012) cause I just could not walk – my hip needed to be replaced. And God, being good and gracious, provided for that to take place and in such a way (anterior method) that my right hip was replaced (total) at noon on one day and I walked out without a cane or crutch 40 hours later (about the same number of hours it takes to get here to Lutheran Theological Seminary, Baguio, Philippines from Brooklyn Park, MN). more »

January/February 2013: Ghana (Pt. 5)

The BotW : February 15, 2013 2:22 pm : CLEF Trip Notes, ghana

This set of notes reveals the “new” CLEF project for Confessional Lutheran Education throughout the Lutheran world of The CLEF!
The CLEF :

INTERNATIONAL LUTHERAN KINDLE PROJECT (ILKP)

The Beginning:

Recovering the Neglected JEM Seminary

The largest confessional Lutheran seminary in Africa, the Jonathan Ekong Memorial seminary, is located just north of the equator in one of the most neglected and forgotten regions of the continent, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. A small state on the coast of southern Nigeria, Akwa Ibom is just east of Niger River delta, a region that has gained a notorious reputation recently for the periodic kidnapping of foreign oil workers. While Akwa Ibom remains on the fringe of that Situation, more »

A MIRACLE TOOK PLACE – OVER NIGHT THE LAPTOP STARTED WORKING. I USED TO TO CHARGE THE PHONE AND THE CAMERA AND OVER THE NIGHT IT DRAINED THE BATTERY DEAD AND THAT SEEMED TO DO THE TRICK.

HOWEVER – WITH CONSTANT INTERRUPTION OF ELECTRICTY AND LITTLE IF ANY INTERNET SERVICE – NOTES HAVE NOT BEEN WRITTEN OR SENT SAVE FOR THE THREE PREVIOUS ONES.

HERE IS SOME OF WHAT WAS NOT SENT PREVIOUSLY – WITH A FEW ADDITIONS – THE DATES WILL NOT HAVE MUCH MEANING AS I TRY TO FILL IN WITHOUT REMEMBERING DAYS. more »

A SAD NOTE TO ALL CLEF NEWS AND SUCH READERS:

MY COMPUTER IS VERY SICK AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE USED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP. THAT MEANS IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO SEND NOTES AND SUCH FROM THE PAST DAYS AS THOSE WORD DOCUMENTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. more »

CONFESSIONAL LUTHERAN EDUCATION FOUNDATION
TRIP NOTES FOR
ARGENTINA, SOUTH AMERICA JULIO 2012

First a few intro notes:

06 JULY 2012 (FRI)

In the last set of notes (Nov. & Dec. 2011) from Argentina I told you that The CLEF was planning to head to Argentina where the South American Luther Academy would be meeting. We are doing that again.

The flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina through Atlanta, GA., begins in Minneapolis at 3.20 pm meaning I am up normal morning time with enough time to finish the packing and be out the door a little after 10a. I have a group of stops to make on the way to the plane – to the dry cleaners, post office and the CLEF accountants. more »

GHANA – TRIP NOTES – MAY 2012 #1

PRENOTES:
I’m thinking I could start this like the last set of The CLEF African notes – you remember: the nanny Dutch airline that serves Bio-Organic Light bread spread because I apparently do not know what I ought to eat and what not to eat. But I won’t start that way.

Yes, The CLEF is off again to Ghana, West Africa to continue her work with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG). We have several coordinated projects with the ELCG.

As you all likely know, The CLEF is working with the ELCG to produce a standard hymnal for the major languages used within the ELCG. These hymnals will also include common liturgies, prayers, Luther’s Small Catechism, the lectionary and more! more »

The first part of this will be mostly travel getting there.

And so it went – I arrived in Minneapolis, got together with Faith and the grandkids at the Ramada – exchanged and repacked and left straight back to the airport.

November/December 2011: Argentina and Uganda

FINALLY SENT!

NOVEMBER 30, 2011 (Wed.) CONTINUED

The meal was great! The ILHP-S committee is well set for the coming months. Remember that Advent is here and that then there is Christmas and that each of the members volunteer their time and talents to the project while holding down full-time jobs as pastors and Seminary “President.” If The CLEF had a big group of funds, I would take a fellow with me for three weeks and hammer the final nails down in this project. But that is not the case – wishful thinking.

Thank you to all of you who continue to pray for us. I pray for you and yours. more »

The Confessional Lutheran Education Foundation
Trip Notes for
Guatemala, Central America – October 2011

October 3, 2011 (Monday)

The flight to Guatemala City, Guatemala, through Atlanta, Georgia, begins in Minneapolis at 5:30am, meaning I’m up and out at 3:00am. I am driving first to the Klemet Preus home to pick up Klemet and his wife and take them to the airport for the same flight. Trust me, the thought “Why am I doing this, getting on a plane at 5:30am?” does often go through my mind. more »

CONFESSIONAL LUTHERAN EDUCATION FOUNDATION
TRIP NOTES FOR
GHANA, WEST AFRICA – AUGUST 2011

Seriously, “BIO/ORGANIC light” was the label on the freaky stuff offered by the nanny airline from Europe to spread on the bread. What ever happened to just good old butter? I am pushing ever closer to the age of retirement and I do not need the Dutch to determine that it is better to put unknown chemicals on my food. Something is run amuck!

So I don’t get you too lost, I was on a plane from Amsterdam to Accra (Ghana). I am now in Tema, Ghana – about 22 miles from the Accra airport. I am staying at the Scandinavian Lodge . . . . nothing resembling Scandinavia at all. more »

Greetings from Kampala, Uganda (Africa) – 2

05 DECEMBER 10 – Sunday

Jake picked us up – I don’t remember the exact time. The service is two hours plus away so I’m guessing we climbed into the Toyota SUV between 8 and 8.30 am. There was no Glenn so we all, Daniel, Jake, his wife, two daughters, Peter from Sudan, and me all piled in. Even though I was given the front dummy seat – by the time we arrived at the church my bad hip was letting me know just how unhappy it was. more »

Greetings from Kampala, Uganda (Africa) – 1

02 – 03 December 10
It was only a few days before Thanksgiving (USA) that The CLEF returned from a very fruitful stint in Buenos Aires, Argentina. And now a few days after the Thanksgiving weekend The CLEF is off to Kampala, Uganda (East Africa). The CLEF went to Uganda last December (2009) at the invitation of The Luther Academy and through them some of the Ugandan students at the seminary in Pretoria, South Africa. Some years earlier I had travelled to Kampala more »
